Precious is an adorable six-year-old girl who had a significant heart problem, requiring surgery if she was to live to adolescence. She lives with her mother and grandmother in a very remote village in Western Kenya without running water, electricity or access to healthcare.
In May, 2024 this little girl walked with her grandmother for hours to attend a mobile health clinic operated and funded by Canadian Nurses for Africa (CNFA), a volunteer, nurse-led charity which has been providing a variety of medical services in the region over the past twelve years.
The Canadian nurses assessed Precious and determined that she needed further examination and potentially surgical treatment by the nearest referral hospital. CNFA arranged and paid for her to travel for a surgical opinion. Six weeks later, Precious had successful heart surgery, funded by a private donation to CNFA. The hospital bill was 58,290 Kenyan Shillings (C$637.00), a very large sum for many people in Kenya, that could not have been paid for without help. Precious’ life has been forever changed as a result, and her family is enormously grateful.
CNFA is dedicated to connecting those in need to those who can help, and directly providing nursing support when and where needed. Precious is just one story of many that illustrates how even a small amount of money goes a long way in the communities we serve in Kenya.
